SECTION 1.

Foreign Office to Messrs. E. D. and Messrs. David Sassoon and Co.
Foreign Office, February 19, 1912.
Gentlemen,
I AM directed by Secretary Sir E. Grey to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 14th instant relative to the notification issued by the Chinese authorities of the Chekiang province prohibiting the import of Indian opium into the province.
In reply, I am to inform you that Sir E. Grey has already been in communication with His Majesty's Minister at Peking regarding this matter, and Sir J. Jordan has reported that His Majesty's consul-general at Shanghai is doing all that he properly can to induce the revolutionary Government at Nanking to cause the treaties to be observed, but that he doubts the extent of their control over Chekiang. I am, &c.
W. LANGLEY.
